Prime Minister Nehru

I remember sitting with Billy Graham in the formal office of Prime Minister
Nehru in New Delhi, India, where the discussion had turned to the
freedom of Christian missionaries to proclaim the Gospel in India. Mr.
Nehru made this profound statement, defining in just a few words the
principle of indigenous evangelism: "Christianity has been extant in India
from the first century following the ministry of the Apostle Thomas. Today
there are perhaps 9,000 Christian missionaries in India. If Christianity is
to be the religion of India, it must stand on its own two feet, and not be
propped up by the West."
